An introduction to compounds found in plants and animals used in cell growth, signalling and defence. The structure, chemistry and function of the major classes of these naturally occurring compounds will be introduced, including terpenes, alkaloids and polyketides. Specific examples of chemistry of compounds found in Australian plants and their use in traditional indigenous medicine will be highlighted.<br/><br/>An overview of chemistry in medicine, case studies on the development of selected drugs will be used to introduce medicinal chemistry.
